To realize my vision of a world free of racial inequity, sexism, class inequalities and homophobia, we need to build vibrant and progressive civil society structures. Individuals alone cannot bring about change.

Asanda Benya is a lecturer in the Sociology Department at University of Cape Town. She completed her PhD at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in 2016. Her thesis was on the construction of gendered identities of women who work underground in the mines. Prior to that she worked as a researcher atthe Department of Labour’s Head Office, in their Research, Policy and Planning directorate. She also worked as a senior tutor and an intern at the Society, Work and Development Institute (SWOP).
