Moya is a literary magazine—published by the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity (AFRE)—that explores questions about Black life across the globe. We investigate the breadth and depth of “planetary Blackness” a term that we use to describe a truly global sense of Blackness, one that reaches into and past well-worn sociological, historical and geographic frames.

In particular, we look beyond conceptions of Blackness that exist solely in relation to whiteness. We highlight Black diasporas in all corners of the globe, to foreground the lesser-known histories and realities of Blackness.

In the inaugural issue of Moya we leap into the future. The feature articles in this issue present counterfactual future histories that grapple with two major trends, global debt and 21st-century homegoing, that in 2040 have affected the lives of Black people across the world. Exploring Planetary Blackness, the issue also highlights works of art that contemplate planetary Blackness. It also previews the second season of AFRE’s podcast, Race Beyond Borders.
