Graphic Novel of Women in Marikana
My AFRE project has been to convert my academic publications on women in Marikana into a graphic novel. Marikana is a mining community with an exclusively black working class population. In 2012 thirty four black mineworkers in Marikana were gunned down by state police for demanding a living wage. The story is Marikana has been told from a class and masculine perspective. My work has been about infusing race and gender lens-women in particular. My main objective with this graphic novel is to insert women’s voices in the Marikana story and capture the role of women using a medium that is easy to digest and useful for community organising.
