Head of the Department of Jurisprudence & Associate Professor, University of Pretoria

In order to reach a liberated, post-conquest, anti-racist democratic society, we must confront the history of dispossession, subjugation, deprivation, exploitation and dehumanisation that defines racial polities in South Africa and the United States.

Joel Modiri holds a LLB degree, and has recently completed his doctoral thesis at the University of Pretoria. He teaches courses in legal theory, social justice and transformation, and has been published extensively in the field of critical race theory. Born in the township of Atteridgeville, Pretoria, a Pan-Africanist Congress-aligned community, his home shaped his early work and writing on the struggles of the black community in South Africa, the continent and in diaspora. After graduating from the University of Pretoria with a law degree in 2013, he was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer in Jurisprudence at the University of Pretoria. Currently he is a Lecturer at the University of Pretoria. Over his 4 years of teaching, he has produced more than 16 research articles and attended numerous local and international conferences.
