Race Beyond Borders | Trailer

Race Beyond Borders is a weekly show that looks at race from different angles, within and beyond South Africa, the United States, to the wider world. It exists to raise new questions about race in general and Blackness in particular, beyond geographical divides.

Much of the global conversation on race and racism today centres on the Black experience in the global north. But in doing so, this conversation unintentionally marginalises Black people who live in the global south— reproducing the very power imbalances that maintain racial inequality. That’s why, through Race Beyond Borders, we seek to open the aperture of our collective understanding by actively reclaiming Blackness across diversity, to give voice to the global experiences of Blackness and widen our field of vision for imagining solutions.

At the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity, our transnational mandate and location – straddling the Atlantic – gives us a distinctive vantage point across the divides of culture, race, history and power. We seek to illuminate new ways of seeing and leading in the service of what Audre Lorde called finding “new patterns of relating across difference.” For us, this mandate is as much a work of the imagination as it is of transforming institutions and driving policy change. It is rooted in a belief that the expansion of the imagination will yield new solutions, new solidarities and new power to achieve the truly just future we all deserve.

Race Beyond Borders is produced by the Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity (AFRE).
