Chief Operating Officer, Common Future

Jennifer Swayne Njuguna is an attorney who is passionate about empowering Black, Indigenous and other communities of colour and strengthening the internal practices of organizations partnering with them. She is the Chief Operating Officer at Common Future, a non-profit intermediary focused on closing the racial wealth gap. She also consults with non-profits and small businesses on strategy, organizational culture, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.

Prior to serving in these roles, Jennifer was the first chief strategy officer at Brooklyn Community Services (BCS), one of the largest human service agencies in Brooklyn, New York. There, she was responsible for implementing the strategic plan, driving change management, and improving internal organizational capacity.

She came to BCS after she worked at the Education Delivery Institute where she helped K-12 education leaders across the United States build capacity to serve students and families. And as a Health Justice Staff Attorney at New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, she used a community lawyering model to partner with community-based organizations and address health disparities.

Jennifer has a J.D. from the New York University School of Law—where she was an AnBryce Scholar and received the Gary E. Moncrieffe Award for Outstanding Student in Racism and Law—and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan. She is from Oakland, CA, and currently resides just outside of New York City with her husband and son.
