Itumeleng Mogorosi
I am Itumeleng Mogorosi, I teach part time at the University of Witwatersrand and work as a sonic art researcher and a practitioner of music and the Black sonic.
As a researcher, my project centres on the Black sonic, intimated in two forms: album production and essay writing. In 2020, I published an anthology of essays titled DeAesthetic: Writing with and from Black Sonic. The essays in this anthology explored songs from different locations of global Blackness, meaning for this project the focus was songs from the new world. I hope to build on this project.
I am also interested in Black Studies as a conceptual framework for engaging with theories from locations that focus on Black aesthetics and Black critical theory. This engagement has within its focus a race conscious understanding of the aesthetic that pushes conventional understanding of the Euro-modern notion of the aesthetic.
