POSITION SUMMARY
The Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity (AFRE) is a Fellowship programme for racial justice leaders from across the world. With offices based at Columbia University in New York City, United States, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg, South Africa, AFRE brings together accomplished individuals from diverse backgrounds to incubate new strategies to challenge anti-Black racism and build the policies, institutions and narratives needed for a more equitable future. The programme aspires to build a dynamic and enduring network of transnational, cross-sectoral leaders dedicated to improving the quality of Black life throughout the world.
AFRE is seeking an experienced and driven Associate Programme Director to spearhead and oversee the curriculum development and assessment work for our programmes. Our ideal candidate will focus primarily on curriculum development and facilitation, designing and delivering engaging learning programs while managing diverse projects across a lean organisation. Strong adaptability and project management skills are essential to ensure smooth facilitation and alignment with organisational goals during both peak and off-peak periods.
They will lead a collaborative developmental process for our Fellowship and alumni experiences from the design to reporting phase to ensure high quality learning experiences and learning assessment for programme participants. The role of the Associate Programme Director includes facilitation, supporting participants leadership development, managing various learning and data systems, and supporting outreach and new Fellow selection.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum Development
Drive a collaborative curriculum development process including various team members and stakeholders.
Develop relevant curriculum development documentation including reports, needs assessments, and overview documents.
Develop content for various fellow facing materials including guidebooks and workbooks.
Support the development of syllabi for various learning experiences.
Identify relevant learning materials related to curricular topics.
Oversee the development of learning materials to ensure alignment to curriculum and programmatic objectives.
Identify and plan specific site-visits during in-person convenings.
Build new relationships with potential guest speakers and manage existing ones.
Write on curricular themes related to the Fellowship Experience for public audiences.
Facilitation & Fellow Support
Co-facilitate learning sessions for Fellows.
Support the delivery of all virtual and in-person programming.
Project manage the delivery of leadership supports including leadership coaching.
Manage the written submissions and feedback processes for all Fellow assignments.
Provide written feedback on Fellow assignments when necessary.
Support AFRE alumni conversations and activities where needed.
Learning Assessment & Evaluation
Develop summative and formative assessments for Fellows.
Develop and manage programme monitoring and evaluation.
Support the development of tools and processes to evaluate and measure learning outcomes.
Support organisational learning and internal reading groups when necessary.
Participate in partner communities of practice related to monitoring and evaluation.
Systems Management
Manage and oversee AFRE’s learning management system including design and content production.
Manage the integration of curriculum and learning related information into Salesforce where needed.
Outreach & Selection
Participate in the reading and reviewing of applications during cohort selection.
Support the design and delivery of group interviews.
Participate in the cohort selection committee to determine cohort finalists.
Support outreach efforts through prospecting potential leads and contacting them when necessary.
Please Note: The Associate Programme Director is a remote position based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Periodic domestic and international travel is required.
Experience
At least five years of experience in teaching, facilitation, or curriculum development.
Experience supporting leadership, political education, or learning programmes.
Experience working in international and multi-cultural contexts.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in history, political science, African studies, Black studies, education, or related field required.
Advanced degree is strongly preferred.
Skills, Knowledge, and Characteristics
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write for internal and external audiences.
Highly attentive to detail with strong organisational skills.
Strong facilitating skills and experience in adult learning programmes.
Can successfully navigate conflict and facilitate challenging conversations.
Are creative and can adapt to changing circumstances and Fellows’ learning needs.
Can supervise and inspire others towards shared goals and long-term objectives.
Rigorous in their preparation and follow through.
Team oriented and highly comfortable in collaborative working environments.
Excited by human development and supporting people.
Passionate about learning and crafting life changing experiences for others.
Deep knowledge of the social justice landscape, particularly as it relates to race and anti-Black racism.
Curious about the vastness of global Blackness and the complexity of race.
Committed to combatting anti-Black racism and open to exploring new and alternative pathways of achieving a world beyond it.
